When you are writing a paper, it is important that you know when to start new paragraphs. This is what helps you to present a coherent argument for your paper. With a coherent argument and organization, your paper will be sure to earn you a top grade. You might also start a new paragraph when the reader needs a pause. You can break in between paragraphs to allow the reader a chance to breathe. If you are writing a highly academic piece, these breaks can help make your paper more readable. They can also help break up a paragraph that is too long or material that is too complex. You must also start new paragraphs when you have the introduction or conclusion. Both need a separate paragraph.

Transitions in Your Essay

When writing an essay, transitions can be one of the trickiest parts. Many students have their key argument elements or key points, but they are not quite sure how to make the paper flow together and bring those key elements together.

There are two writing tools that are absolutely necessary for helping the reader follow the arguments in your paper. They include signposts and transitions. Signposts are internal aids that offer assistance to your reader. They are often several sentences that outline what the article has already covered and what else it is going to cover. Transitions are often one or two sentences that help the reader to transition from one idea to another. These are often placed at the end of paragraphs to enable better flow from one paragraph to the next.

Paragraphs should be thought of as units of thought that have a single, well developed idea in each. There are a few rules you should adhere to for almost all papers:

  • Make sure you have one main idea for every paragraph, and not any more.
  • Try and have between three and five sentences per paragraph.
  • Include three types paragraphs, on average, per page.
  • Make sure your paragraphs are all proportional to the length of your paper; if you have a short 5 paragraph essay, then each of the paragraphs will be relatively small compared to a twenty page term paper.
  • If you are left with a few short paragraphs, try and combine them with the rest of the paper. See if there are other places they can go or whether you can add more supporting details to the points to make them more fully developed.
