8 Tips For Enhancing Your Academic Essay Writing Skills

There are people who have writing in their blood, and they can put words on paper without any effort. On the opposite end, other people need to struggle for hours to create a good essay and they constantly try to improve their writing skills. This is an easy thing to do if you are willing to dedicate some time to it. Even if you have an analytical mind, you can create fun, easy to read content in a matter of weeks. With a little bit of practice, anything is possible.

  1. Read as much as you can. It does not really matter what you read as long as you do it on a regular basis. You will understand, even without realizing, how to make sentences sound good and how to arrange the words properly.
  2. Improve your vocabulary. Search for new synonyms constantly and try to use them in your composition. Replace the words that you already know with more academic ones.
  3. Go back to basics. Study some grammar books for college. You can be surprised on how many things you though you know, but you actually don’t. Very often, we forget the basics of a subject because we study them in the first years of school.
  4. Watch the punctuation. A big part of the final form of an essay is the punctuation. When it is not used right, the composition will seem bad even if the content is good. If you are not sure about certain punctuation rules, do your research from school manuals.
  5. Observe other examples. It can be very useful for you to read the essays of other students and to see how they are arranging the words and what structure are they using.
  6. Write about what you love. When you write about a topic that you are passionate about, you write better, faster, and you have fun while doing it.
  7. Use templates. When you don’t know how to approach a certain writing style, you can use templates that you find online or in your school books. When you see the exact elements that represent a style, without the content, you will understand much better.
  8. Always ask for feedback. From teachers or students, you always have to ask their opinion about your work. Ask them what they think it’s good or not, and try to improve the areas where you are not great.
